RS Summary of Ethnic Theater in USA

Theater evolved in the United States' history as a way to entertain certain groups of people with diverse, unique backgrounds. The appeal for Immigrants is high because often, scenes would depict the daily lives and traditions they were used to from back home. Immigrants found this 'taste of home' comforting and felt like they could achieve some level of normalcy in this new country. In a short time, theater adapted to voice the growing concerns of the discrimination against immigrants, crying out against the deep need for immigrants to forever have their papers on them. As different peoples entered America during different eras, the type of life theaters displayed changed with the audience. The many different levels of socioeconomic status could be deduced from the types of plays that were popular in any given time period. Theater was and continues to be a way to bridge the gaps between ethnic groups and to help explain diverse backgrounds and traditions.
